TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, about the prospects for a settlement in Ukraine, Anadolu reported.
The Chinese government said Putin briefed Xi on the results of the visit by US envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow earlier this week, as well as the "Ukrainian crisis."
Putin is expected to meet US President Donald Trump in the coming days, with media reports suggesting the summit could take place as early as Monday, August 11, 2025. The Russian leader also highlighted the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and China.
CCTV, as quoted by Al Arabiya, stated that the call took place at Putin's request. It came after the Kremlin announced on Thursday that Putin would soon meet Trump in an effort to end the war, now in its fourth year.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has adopted a softer stance toward Russia. However, he has grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress toward peace and has threatened to impose high tariffs on countries, including China, that purchase Russian oil.
On Wednesday, Trump said he might introduce new tariffs on China similar to the 25 percent duty already imposed on India for buying Russian oil.
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Friday that China’s trade and energy cooperation with Russia is "just and legitimate." He added, "We will continue to take reasonable measures to ensure energy security based on our own national interests."
Friday’s phone call between Xi and Putin was their second in less than two months. Xi welcomed the efforts of Moscow and Washington to maintain dialogue, improve relations, and push for a political resolution to the "Ukrainian crisis."
The Chinese leader told Putin that Beijing will "uphold its consistent position" and continue to "promoting peace and dialogue." Both leaders also discussed bilateral economic and trade ties.
The Kremlin said in a separate statement that Putin and Xi discussed the main outcomes of Witkoff’s visit. "Thanking for the provided information, Xi Jinping voiced support for resolving the Ukrainian crisis on a long-term basis," the statement read.
The two heads of state also talked about several urgent issues on the bilateral and international agenda, including preparations for Putin’s visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japanese militarism and the end of World War II in September.
Russia and China have deepened their economic, trade, and security cooperation since Moscow’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which severely strained Russia’s ties with the West.
Earlier on the same day, Putin also called the presidents of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to discuss the same matters.
