TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that there are those who called the Red and White Cabinet fat. However, according to him, it is not a problem because the cabinet is filled with talented individuals.
"Some say that our cabinet is fat, there are so many, right? But if there are many talented people, then why not? They are the ones who serve the Indonesian people," said Prabowo during his closing speech at the 6th Congress of the Democrat Party at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Jakarta on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
Prabowo mentioned one of the ministers, namely, the Minister of Transmigration M Iftitah Sulaiman. According to the President, the Democrat minister has an extraordinary transmigration plan. For example, Iftitah has three scenarios for implementing transmigration amidst budget cuts.
The first option is a minimum of hundreds of billion rupiah, the middle option is almost Rp1 trillion, and the maximum option is more than one trillion rupiah. Prabowo opted for the maximum option proposed by Iftitah.
"But he was disappointed, I did not choose the middle option. I chose the maximum option. In fact, I think there should be a fourth option, a surprise, more than what you expected. Because his concept is extraordinary," said the Chairman of the Gerindra Party.
Prabowo's Red and White Cabinet has been criticized for being considered fat. The cabinet is filled with around 106 ministers and deputy ministers, including coordinating ministers. The current number of ministries is 48, more than the 34 during President Joko Widodo's era.
The Head of the Department of Politics and Social Change at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Arya Fernandes, revealed that the fear of the newly elected president being impeached is one of the reasons for the emergence of the phenomenon of the fat coalition.
"There is a concern that these presidents will be impeached by the DPR. Therefore, they have to ensure the safety of their coalition in the DPR," said Arya during the CSIS webinar discussion 'Responding to the Prabowo-Gibran Cabinet: Implications, Risks, and Inputs' on Friday, October 25, 2024.
In addition to the fear of impeachment, another factor for the fat coalition is the extreme multi-party system in Indonesia. Arya explained that the fatness of the coalition is determined by the composition of power in the DPR. A coalition that approaches 70 percent or more in the DPR is called a super majority coalition.
