TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka supports a smooth and peaceful regional election. Hopefully, he said, Indonesian citizens can exercise their voting rights safely and in accordance with the free election principles.
Gibran expressed his statements while attending the national consolidation of the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) at the National Monument complex, Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The event also served as a ceremonial ahead of the pre-election silence, polling, and vote-counting of the 2024 regional election.
"Resolve potential for conflicts no matter how small. Don’t let them fester and take lives,” said Gibran.
The government, according to Gibran, does not wish for what occurred in Sampang Regency, Madura, to happen elsewhere. "All parties must actively engage in prevention and self-detection," he said.
“Don’t let political differences lead to division, to trading insults and punches, let alone take lives. Voting differently is normal.”
The simultaneous regional election will be held on November 27, 2024. Election authorities will count votes until mid-December 2024. Meanwhile, the pre-election silence will commence on November 24, 3 days prior to the election.
The Sampang conflict
A resident of Sampang, Jimmy Sugito Putra, died in a mobbing incident. The victim was a witness for one of the running pairs in the Sampang regent election. The head of regent candidate pair Slamet Junaidi-Achmad Mahfudz winning team, Surya Noviantoro, said the incident occurred after regent candidate Slamet Junaidi visited religious figures in Ketapang.
Slamet was confronted by an armed mob but managed to escape through another route. The assailants then entered the location visited by Slamet Junaidi. Some individuals exchanged heated arguments, leading to the mobbing incident.
Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that three perpetrators of the stabbing incident had been arrested.
"The regional election will soon take place, please ensure that (the Sampang case) will not be repeated,” Listyo said at the East Java Regional Police Headquarters in Surabaya on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, quoted by Antara.
The Bawaslu chief Rahmat Bagja stated that the East Java Bawaslu is investigating the stabbing incident in Sampang, which resulted in the death of one person. Bagja stressed that no lives should be lost in the regional election.
"What happened in Sampang is regrettable, and our colleagues, together with the integrated law enforcement center and the police, are supervising the case," Bagja said in Jakarta on Tuesday.
