TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) released its latest report on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, stating that every day, 10 Palestinian children lose one or both of their legs due to the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
The UN-sponsored Global Protection Cluster reported that in Gaza, approximately 134,105 people, including over 40,500 children, have suffered new war-related injuries. It is estimated that around 25 percent of them have new disabilities requiring acute and ongoing rehabilitation, as reported by Middle East Eye.
Additionally, it is estimated that over 35,000 Palestinians in Gaza have experienced significant hearing damage, a result of the intense explosions experienced by the population since the beginning of Israel's brutal aerial attacks in October 2023.
The report also said: "There is no safe space in Gaza. 20 months of intense hostilities have destroyed the protection environment for persons with disabilities and older persons."
The report added, "As needs rapidly expand, response services continue to be attacked and impeded. Hospitals, ambulances, and medical and humanitarian personnel have been systematically targeted, with over 1,580 health workers and 467 humanitarian staff killed."
Health facilities, including emergency and life-saving rehabilitation units, have been destroyed, with only 47 percent of hospitals partially functioning, the report said. "Extensive explosive ordnance under 50 million tons of debris puts persons with disabilities at disproportionate risk," it wrote.
Israel initiated the genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023, after Palestinian resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip launched a sudden operation into the occupied territories.
Continued Israeli aggression has resulted in the death of over 58,000 Palestinians and injuries to many more, with women and children bearing a disproportionately heavy burden of suffering.
The head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) on Wednesday warned that the war in Gaza has escalated beyond a humanitarian disaster, describing it as a fundamental threat to the rules-based international order and urging immediate action by countries.
"Entire families, entire neighborhoods, an entire generation are being wiped out in Gaza," said Philippe Lazzarini at X, as quoted by Anadolu, referring to his speech at the Emergency Conference of States held in Bogota. "Hundreds of UNRWA staff—our colleagues, our friends—have been killed. Aid is blocked. Civilians are not protected."
The head of UNRWA emphasized that the war in Gaza "is not only a humanitarian catastrophe, it is a crisis for the rules-based international order," stressing the urgency for countries to act collectively.
