TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for People’s Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, known as Cak Imin, said Rp900 trillion of online gambling transactions flow overseas every year, prompting President Prabowo Subianto to ask his cabinet to tackle the issue.
“The president urges everyone to ask everyone handle online gambling swiftly because Rp900 trillion of common citizens’ money flows overseas each year,” he said after visiting an online gambling inpatient at a psychiatry ward in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta on Friday, November 15, 2024. “We can’t let this slide.”
Cak Imin said online gambling is difficult to eradicate, despite its destructive nature to the economy and health. Thus, the minister declared online gambling a national social disaster.
Around 8.8 million Indonesians are involved in online gambling, he said. “As much as 80 percent of them are lowest- and middle-class citizens,” said Cak Imin.
As an initial step to tackle online gambling, Cak Imin began by visiting victims of online gambling to delve into the mental health aspects of online gambling.
Cak Imin said he will work with relevant ministries to eradicate online gambling in the future and involve citizens in the efforts.
