TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former head coach of the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae-yong, has recounted the process of his dismissal by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) on January 6, 2025. At that time, the PSSI invited the media for the announcement of the end of the contract with the South Korean coach and a new coach from the Netherlands.
“The Indonesian Football Federation informed me of my dismissal at 9:40 a.m. on the 6th (of January) and then announced the appointment of a new coach at 12 p.m. that day,” Shin Tae-yong said in an interview with Yonhap News on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
“Although I don't understand it, I humbly accept it,” added the coach, who is familiarly called STY.
Shin Tae-yong served as the Indonesian national team coach from January 2020 to January 2025. During his tenure, he guided the Garuda squad to significant achievements, including: runner-up in the 2020 AFF Cup, bronze medal at the 2021 SEA Games, runner-up in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup, and qualification for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup.
The 54-year-old coach also led the squad to reach the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup, secure fourth place in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup, and qualify for the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“I worked very hard and succeeded in my five years in Indonesia. I am proud of myself. I return home with pride as I have laid a strong foundation for Indonesian football,” he stated.
Dutch-born Patrik Kluivert has since assumed the role of Indonesian national team coach. The former Barcelona player is tasked with leading the Garuda squad to qualify for the World Cup.
