TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shin Tae-yong said he would visit Indonesia often despite being sacked as Indonesia's national team coach by PSSI. The South Korean tactician admitted that he has an emotional attachment to the country after coaching Indonesian football team for five years.
"Even if I return to South Korea, I will often visit Indonesia out of love, and I hope to see (the football ecosystem) in other countries or Korea in a better way," Shin Tae-yong told Yonhap News, quoted on Friday, January 17, 2025.
The man known as STY is known to have a football academy called Shin Tae-yong Football Academy. The academy released a statement saying that it will continue to operate even though the 54-year-old tactician was fired from his position as coach of the Indonesian national team.
"Behind the scenes, everyone here has enthusiastically supported me, so I'm sure I can go home with a smile," he said.
Earlier in the day, he spoke about his dismissal by the PSSI on January 6. On that day, the Indonesian Football Association invited the media team to announce the termination of cooperation with the South Korean coach and announced a new coach from the Netherlands.
"The Indonesian Football Association informed me of my dismissal at 9:40 a.m. on the 6th (January) and announced that the new coach would arrive at noon that day. Although I don't understand it, I humbly accept it," said Shin Tae-yong.
Shin Tae-yong will serve as the coach of the Indonesian national team from January 2020 to January 2025. During this time, he led the Garuda to a runner-up finish in the 2020 AFF Cup, a bronze medal in the 2021 SEA Games, a runner-up finish in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup and qualification for the 2023 Asian U-20 Championship.
He also led the Indonesian national team to the round of 16 in the 2023 Asian Cup, fourth place in the 2024 Asian U-23 Cup and qualification for the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
