Shin Tae-yong Responds to Criticism After Indonesian National Team Fails to Win in 5 World Cup Qualifying Matches

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coach of the Indonesian National Team, Shin Tae-yong, is currently under pressure. The South Korean tactician has started to receive negative comments after the Garuda Team failed to win in five World Cup 2026 Qualifying matches.

After the Indonesian national team suffered a 0-4 defeat against Japan on Friday, November 15, he became the subject of criticism from several parties. He was deemed to have difficulty in bringing out the best abilities of his players when facing elite teams and having limited tactical schemes.

The tactical experiment that resulted in a loss against China last October was also heavily questioned by supporters. Moreover, his reluctance to utilize Eliano Reijnders in two consecutive matches also sparked discussions.

The current situation is a stark contrast to before. Shin Tae-yong, who was recently praised highly, now seems to be facing animosity. In fact, many are calling for the 54-year-old coach to be dismissed if he fails to secure a victory against Arabia on Tuesday night.

In response to various criticisms, Shin Tae-yong tries to remain calm. He sees his position as the coach of the Indonesian national team clearly attracts attention and pressure.

"Certainly there is pressure, from the media, and also from Indonesian football lovers who pay close attention to Indonesian football. When winning and losing, there will certainly be good and bad news," said Shin Tae-yong.

"Indeed, I don't always have to hear good news. When there are suboptimal results, sometimes I have to listen to criticism from fans, as it can be an evaluation for me on what team issues need to be fixed," he said.

Shin Tae-yong requests that the Indonesian football public continue to support his team.

"I ask the fans to continue supporting Indonesian football; I am not Indonesian, but as the national team coach, I will work as hard as possible and strive for Indonesia," he said.

"Qualifying for the World Cup is indeed good, and that is what we aim for, but even if we don't qualify, we can jointly think of evaluations for our team, although there have been many developments," said the former South Korean national team coach.

The Indonesian national team currently occupies the last position in the temporary standings of Group C with three points, or is three points behind the fourth-placed team, China. Aside from the group winners and the second-placed team that qualify directly for the final round of the 2026 World Cup, only the third and fourth-placed teams are eligible to participate in the fourth-round qualifiers.

The match between the Indonesian national team and Saudi Arabia will take place on Tuesday night, November 19, 2024, starting at 19:00 PM local time.
