TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir is planning to merge PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Persero) or PT Pelni with PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Persero into PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo).
"We plan to merge Pelni and ASDP into Pelindo to become a strong force at sea, as we are a maritime country," he said during a Working Meeting with Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives at Senayan, Jakarta, Monday, November 4, 2024.
Erick mentioned that as a maritime country, it is important for Indonesia to maintain synergy between port services and shipping policies. He stated that fragmented policies between ports and shipping could make Indonesia lose competitiveness.
He also addressed the recent surge of import dumping in Indonesia. According to him, the influx of imported products is due to the lack of synergy between port and shipping policies.
"We must start determining which ports have import access, as many of these imports are dumpings that kill our micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM)," he said.
Therefore, he stated that merging Pelni and ASDP into Pelindo is the right solution to address these issues. Erick emphasized that this effort is to uphold justice for the Indonesian nation.
Erick also mentioned that as an industrial country, Indonesia must not be deceived by the high volume of illegal imported products entering the country without paying import duties.
"Because we cannot continue to be a country that is continuously dumped with foreign products without a fair tax structure and fair distribution for our nation," he said.
The SOE restructuring plan has been widely discussed by him over the past few months. In early March 2024, he had designed a roadmap for the 2024-2034 period regarding the consolidation plan of state-owned companies, including reducing the number of SOEs to 30.
"If possible, the number of SOEs should be around 30. It was 41 this year. In the future, around 30," he told reporters at the Mandiri Investment Forum event in Jakarta, Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
Since taking office in 2019, Erick has planned to reduce the number of SOEs. In June 2020, the Ministry of SOEs had reduced its entities from 142 companies to 107 companies.
This was part of the SOE restructuring program aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of SOE performance.
