TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spain will evacuate 13 sick Palestinian children from Gaza, which is currently facing a genocide carried out by Israel, by using a military plane. Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated on Wednesday as quoted by Al Arabiya that the children and their families will be brought from Jordan to Spain to receive treatment at a hospital.
A military transport plane A400 is being equipped with medical equipment and is scheduled to depart on Wednesday night to Amman to bring them to Spain "so that they can receive treatment," she said.
Spain has repeatedly received sick children since the start of the Israeli genocide in Gaza in October 2023.
The left-wing government of the country is one of the most vocal critics in the European Union of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the densely populated narrow coastal strip.
"The situation in Gaza is truly terrible. The level of cruelty shown by (Benjamin) Netanyahu is truly unacceptable, and I believe the international community must respond," said Robles, referring to the Israeli prime minister.
Earlier this week, the Spanish government said it would airlift 12 tons of food to Gaza as the threat of famine looms over the Palestinian territory after 21 months of war.
A similar air aid delivery of 26 tons occurred in March 2024.
The war was triggered by Hamas' cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. 1,219 people are reported to have been killed, including by the Israeli military itself.
In response, Israel launched a genocide that has killed more than 60,000 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to data from the territory's Health Ministry.
As reported by Anadolu, Israel has blockaded Gaza for 18 years, and since March 2, has closed all border crossings, obstructing the entry of humanitarian aid. This has worsened the already dire conditions in the enclave.
The relentless bombing for over 21 months has destroyed the enclave and caused food shortages. 154 people, including 89 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition in Gaza since October 2023.
On Monday, Israeli human rights groups B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights-Israel openly accused Israel of carrying out a genocide in Gaza, citing systematic destruction of the Palestinian society and deliberate dismantling of the healthcare system in the territory.
Israel is also facing a case of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
