FOR travelers making a stopover or transiting at Changi Airport, Singapore, they can read Star Wars comics and novels at the temporary library. The temporary library with a Star Wars theme is part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the National Library Board (NLB).
The temporary library which was inaugurated on August 6, 2025, will operate until January 24, 2026. Travelers can visit the library every day from 10:00 to 22:00 local time. It is located on the 2nd floor of Terminal 3 near the Skytrain and the connecting bridge to Jewel.
How to visit the library
There are more than 2,000 Star Wars book titles, ranging from the Darth Vader comic series to the novel Thrawn: Ascendancy available at this library. Travelers of all ages can also participate in activities such as the Jedi personality quiz and Star Wars trivia. Interestingly, this library is also equipped with NLB's first automated book retrieval system.
After visitors select a book at the touchscreen kiosk, a robotic arm will retrieve and bring it to the pickup point. These books can be returned at the same location or at any NLB branch across the island.
Visitors can access the Star Wars library at Changi Airport by scanning their standard library identification card, the NLB eCard, or by requesting a daily QR-coded ticket using a registered Singapore phone number or email through the provided link. The collection can also be borrowed through the NLB Mobile app available on Google Play and the App Store.
NLB anniversary celebration
CEO of NLB Ng Cher Pong mentioned that the response to the temporary library over the past two years has brought reading and learning closer. This includes the Star Wars-themed library, which can be a fun way to learn about the legendary Star Wars through reading.
"We are happy to collaborate with Disney and are grateful for Changi Airport Group’s support in opening this Star Wars-themed library as part of our NLB30 celebrations," he said as quoted from Travel and Leisure Asia.
The Star Wars pop-up library NLB is one of the ways to enhance the reading, learning, and discovery experience, in conjunction with its 30th anniversary on September 1.
As part of the NLB 30th annual celebration on September 1, a series of events began in June, as quoted from Strait Times. Among them is the exhibition Book Bugs: Unearthing Memories, featuring 425 Book Bug cards, at the Asian Civilisations Museum until August 17. This program, launched in 2016, aims to instill the habit of reading among young people.
Prior to the Star Wars-themed temporary library, NLB first launched a pop-up library themed with manga at City Square Mall, in 2023.
Since 2021, NLB has established library centers to bring content and services to public spaces such as MRT stations, bus stops, shopping centers, and parks to encourage spontaneous reading and discovery.
There are eight pop-up library centers, from the National Library Building on Victoria Street to Orchard Road. Each library center features 90 book titles in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil selected by 30 Singaporean figures such as performing artist Ebi Shankara, violinist Chloe Chua, and writer and comedian Haryani Othman.
