TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reissued early warnings about the potential for high waves in various waters on November 5 to 6, 2024. BMKG forecaster, M. Apdillah Akbar, said that the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia is moving from southwest to west at speeds around 4-15 knots, while in the southern area, the movement is from east to southeast, with a maximum speed of 20 knots.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the Banda Sea and the Arafura Sea," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, 5 November 2024.

This wind pattern can trigger an increase in waves at sea up to 1.25-2.5 meters high. The potential is in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, as well as in the western part of the Indian Ocean near Aceh, the western parts of the Nias Islands and Mentawai Islands, and the western parts of Bengkulu and Lampung. Additionally, it is also present in the southern part of the Indian Ocean off Banten, South West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, South East Java, and Bali.

According to Apdillah, the early warning for high waves also applies to the waters south of West Nusa Tenggara and South East Nusa Tenggara. Similar potentials are also detected in the North Natuna Sea, the northern and southern parts of the Karimata Strait, the northern and central parts of the Makassar Strait, the Flores Sea, and the Banda Sea. The areas cover the western, central, and eastern parts of the Arafuru Sea. This includes most of the Sulawesi Sea, the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku, and the Pacific Ocean north of South West and West Papua.

"The potential for high waves in these areas can pose risks to maritime safety," he added.

Fishermen with small boats are advised to be cautious of winds speed exceeding 15 knots. These fishing boats should also be aware of sea waves higher than 1.25 meters. Meanwhile, barges are reminded to pay attention to wind risks exceeding 16 knots and waves above 1.5 meters.

Ships carrying passengers and goods on ferry routes are also advised to beware of winds faster than 21 knots and waves over 2.5 meters high. As for jumbo-sized fleets, such as cargo and cruise ships, they should be wary of wind speeds surpassing 27 knots and wave heights over 4 meters.
