Thailand Says at Least 11 Killed in Clashes with Cambodia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand's Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin confirmed that at least 11 people, including civilians, were killed in clashes between Thailand's forces and Cambodia in the disputed border area of both countries on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Thailand launched an airstrike on Cambodian military targets, as reported by CNA, while Cambodia fired rockets and artillery in a dramatic escalation of the long-standing border dispute between the two neighboring countries.

The Thai military accused Cambodian forces of initiating the attack with heavy weapons, including Russian-made BM-21 rockets. This was then countered by the Thai Air Force's F-16 fighter jet attacks on several locations in Cambodia.

The Cambodian Ministry of National Defense stated that their forces acted in self-defense after being attacked.

The Thai military, as reported by Aljazeera , issued a statement detailing what they described as Cambodia's armed aggression, resulting in the deaths and injuries of civilians.

Six civilians in Thailand were reported dead and two others injured in an attack near a gas station in Ban Phue, Kantharalak district, Sisaket Province.

Two civilians, including an eight-year-old boy, were killed, and two others were injured in the Ban Chorok area, Kap Choeng district, Surin Province.

One person died and another was injured in several areas in Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani Province.

One person was injured in Ban Kruad district, Buriram Province.

Attacks in several other areas caused damage to residential houses and agricultural livestock.

The Thai military condemned the violent actions and emphasized their readiness to defend Thailand's sovereignty and citizens.

Surasant Kongsiri, the spokesperson of Thailand's Ministry of Defense, stated that the clashes are ongoing in at least six areas along the border.

The battles have escalated since the outbreak near the ancient Khmer temple of Ta Moan Thom, located in the disputed area on the border between Surin Province, Thailand, and Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia.

More than 40,000 people have been evacuated from the disputed border area. Thai citizens, including children and the elderly, have taken refuge in bomb shelters built from concrete and reinforced with sandbags and car tires in Surin Province, Thailand.

A local woman in Surin, who sought shelter from the fighting, told Thailand's Public Broadcasting Service (TPBS) that the number of shots fired in the battle between both sides was 'countless.'

In a social media post, Hun Sen, who led Cambodia for nearly 40 years before handing over power to his son in 2023, urged Cambodians not to panic and not to buy rice and other goods from warehouses or sell items at high prices.

He also urged the people of Cambodia to have faith in the government and the military.

"Please stay calm and composed, and go about your daily routines as usual," he said.

Thailand and Cambodia have been in intense dispute over an area known as the 'Emerald Triangle,' where the borders of both countries and Laos meet. Another disputed border area is home to several ancient temples.

The dispute has been ongoing for several decades, erupting into bloody military clashes over 15 years ago and resurging in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a firefight.
