TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok is reportedly planning various scenarios for a possible operational ban in the United States. In an internal memo obtained and reported by The Verge, TikTok employees were told the company is “continuing to plan the way forward” while awaiting the Supreme Court's decision.
“We know it’s unsettling to not know exactly what happens next,” the memo wrote, quoted Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
TikTok emphasized that its offices will remain operational regardless of what happens to the app in the U.S. in the coming days. “The bill is not written in a way that impacts the entities through which you are employed, only the US user experience [of TikTok].”
The Verge reported that one source said the situation inside U.S. offices of TikTok is “definitely stressful.” Another source said that employees who made it through the threat of an earlier ban are now “seem rattled.”
TikTok's presence in the U.S. has been questioned before at the end of Donald Trump's first term in 2020.
Now, TikTok is facing several possible scenarios, including the potential sale of TikTok to a third party. The Chinese government, which has the final say on the sale of TikTok, is reportedly considering selling the app to potential buyers such as Elon Musk or Frank McCourt, who have submitted a proposal dubbed Project Liberty.
In addition, TikTok is also again bracing for a possible total ban in the U.S. at the tail end of Joe Biden’s presidency. In this scenario, the ByteDance subsidiary is ensuring that employees' jobs, salaries, and benefits remain safe, even if the app is no longer available to U.S. users.
“As employees in the U.S., your employment, pay, and benefits are secure, and our offices will remain open, even if this situation hasn't been resolved before the January 19 deadline,” the memo reads.
Previously, Donald Trump, the U.S. President-elect who will take office on January 20, also said that he wanted to save TikTok by negotiating some kind of deal. It is known that TikTok is currently used by about 170 million people in the United States, nearly half of the country's population.
