TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump added that any peace agreement would involve territorial exchanges. "We are going to have a meeting with Russia. We’ll start off with Russia," he said on Friday while hosting leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed the scheduled meeting, stating that Alaska was a logical location.
Disputed Territories Central to Peace Talks
Trump detailed his months-long efforts to broker an agreement to end Russia's invasion, suggesting that any breakthrough would require territorial exchanges.
"It’s very complicated. But we’re going to get some back, and we’re going to get some switched. There’ll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we’ll be talking about that either later or tomorrow," he said.
Ukraine and its European allies have long opposed any agreement that would require the surrender of occupied territories to Russia, including Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.
Putin, however, has repeatedly stated that any deal must include Ukraine relinquishing some of the territories that Russia has occupied since 2014. He has also called for an end to Western aid to Ukraine and for Kyiv to refrain from joining the NATO military alliance.
Location of Summit Raises Questions
The meeting between Trump and Putin raises questions, as the Russian leader faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC). Prosecutors have requested Putin’s arrest for alleged war crimes committed in Ukraine.
If Putin were to travel through any ICC member state, he could be arrested. However, the United States is not an ICC member and does not recognize the court's jurisdiction.
The Kremlin had previously mentioned the possibility of a meeting in the United Arab Emirates, another non-member state. Trump made the final announcement on Friday via a post on Truth Social, confirming that he would welcome Putin to the northernmost U.S. state.
Alaska is located approximately 88 kilometers from Russia across the Bering Strait, and some smaller islands are even closer.
