TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Marisa Lago, visited Indonesia from November 15 to 20, 2024. The visit aims to deepen economic ties, advance U.S.-Indonesia trade, and engage in key areas of shared interest, including digital infrastructure, smart cities, and sustainability.
Lago arrived with a high-level delegation from the United States as part of the Innovative Technologies for Urban Infrastructure Development Trade Mission.
In Indonesia, Lago held bilateral meetings with officials from across the Indonesian government to help foster cooperation in digital trade, infrastructure development, and supply chain resilience. Lago will also visit the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
The United States Embassy in Jakarta, in a written statement, explained that this trade mission is a testament to the recently enhanced partnership between the United States and Indonesia.
In a Joint Statement between President Joe Biden and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on November 12, the commitment of both countries to advancing the goals of the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was reaffirmed, with a shared commitment to deeper collaboration in trade, investment, and sustainable development.
“This trade mission, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s first-ever focused on smart cities, brings to Indonesia some of the most cutting-edge U.S. companies across the technology and infrastructure industries,” said Under Secretary Lago.
“We’ll be pursuing the numerous opportunities for U.S. companies to support Indonesia’s ambitious digital transformation agenda, as well as its plans to develop smart city infrastructure in hundreds of cities.”
U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir stated that this trade mission represents the United States' commitment to strengthening private sector ties with Indonesia. The ambassador said that the U.S. is “dedicated to fostering partnerships that bring quality project development to Indonesia in collaboration with the Indonesian people, supporting long-term growth and sustainable urban development.”
Previously, on November 18, Under Secretary Lago met with leaders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia and the US-ASEAN Business Council, as well as young leaders from the financial technology industry, to support bilateral trade and investment initiatives. As part of her commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment, she will also engage with local women business executives throughout her trip.
Meanwhile, in IKN, Lago will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with representatives from the IKN Authority to inaugurate a U.S.-funded pilot command center for managing smart city infrastructure. This initiative demonstrates the U.S. commitment to supporting Indonesia’s sustainable urban development efforts.
The visit reaffirmed the U.S. Department of Commerce’s commitment to enhancing economic and trade partnerships with Indonesia. The United States also aims to advance collaboration on infrastructure and promote inclusive economic growth, emphasizing its commitment to driving sustainable and resilient economic development in the Indo-Pacific region.
