TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Suhail Mohamed Faraj al-Mazrouei, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), attended the 3rd UAE-Indonesia Roundtable Discussion at Raffles Hotel, Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Thursday, January 30. As the special envoy of the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister, he stressed that transparency is a priority for the collaboration between UAE and Indonesia if both countries aim to achieve their partnership and cooperation targets.
"Whatever the issues, we need to discuss them. I, along with Foreign Minister Sugiono, are here to support you in ensuring we resolve any misunderstandings and issues," al-Mazrouei affirmed.
He emphasized the necessity for both countries to negotiate and resolve disputes quickly to bolster their partnership and launch significant projects in Indonesia.
"We are ready to invest if given the opportunity. However, companies from the UAE are also presented with investment prospects elsewhere, and we must recognize that proposing unfeasible projects won't be appealing," he noted.
Al-Mazrouei also pointed out the need to attract as much foreign direct investment as possible into Indonesia. However, convincing investors to come would be challenging without transparency, ease of doing business, and future investment protection.
he expressed optimism about global interest in Indonesian investments, citing the country’s significant improvements in reducing bureaucracy and enhancing business environments.
During his visit, al-Mazrouei included a delegation of 48 members from diverse sectors such as energy, industry, education, technology, infrastructure, and transportation. "We come here to discuss future projects in Indonesia," al-Mazrouei concluded.
A Snipe from South Korea
Al-Mazrouei’s call for transparency came just weeks after a remark by Ko YoungKyung, a researcher from Yonsei University, South Korea, who highlighted challenges faced by foreign investors in Indonesia. Speaking at the Indonesian Next Generation Journalist Network on Korea Workshop in Jakarta in early December 2024, YoungKyung identified three key issues for Korean investors: regulatory uncertainty, trust issues, and inadequate infrastructure support.
He particularly noted the challenge posed by Indonesia's increase in the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirement from 40 to 60 percent, which complicates investment decisions for Korean companies.
