TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Lake Day resolution proposed by Indonesia was officially adopted by consensus in the 79th Plenary Session of the UN General Assembly held in New York, United States, on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

This resolution received widespread support from 73 countries representing various regions, including ASEAN member countries, the Netherlands, Chile, Russia, China, Germany, Senegal, Kenya, Qatar, and the UAE, as well as countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific, and Latin America.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN in New York, Hari Prabowo, expressed concern that lakes are often neglected in discussions on environmental issues. A significant number of large lakes are shrinking, despite accounting for 90 percent of the world's freshwater sources and playing a vital role in agriculture, energy, and tourism.

Quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hari mentioned that lake degradation could hinder the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global welfare. Therefore, sustainable lake management is key to protecting the world's freshwater, biodiversity, food security, and ecosystems.

Through this adopted resolution, World Lake Day is officially commemorated every August 27. Hari hopes that this occasion can serve as a collective reminder for the international community about the urgency of lake management.

"The World Lake Day resolution reaffirms the global commitment to protect lakes while also protecting the environment and sustainable livelihoods," he stated.

The World Lake Day resolution is a follow-up to the 10th World Water Forum held in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2024. The forum discussed the important role of global synergy in managing water resources and the environment.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers the adoption of the World Lake Day resolution as tangible evidence of Indonesia’s successful water diplomacy on the international stage.
