TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UNESCO, in partnership with K-pop icon and Goodwill Ambassador Seventeen, has launched a global initiative to empower youth. A total of 100 youth-led projects across 70 countries will receive financial grants, mentorship, and training opportunities, thanks to the US$1 million contribution from the renowned music group.
“Young generations are a source of innovation and solutions to meet the challenges of our century, but they often lack funds and support. With a budget of one million dollars, made possible by SEVENTEEN’s contribution, 100 inspiring initiatives created by and for young people will be implemented, benefiting thousands of youth and their communities,” said Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General, in a press release on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Seventeen also expressed their enthusiasm for the initiative. "The creative spirit and sense of responsibility that permeate these youth-led projects have been an inspiration to us all. We are excited to see how the collective experience will help build youth communities and empower many more like ourselves to achieve their dreams,” they said.
This initiative aims to address critical challenges faced by today's youth, including mental health struggles and limited access to opportunities that match their aspirations. Empowering youth is crucial for sustainable development considering 52% of the global population is currently under 30 years old and is projected to reach 57% by 2030.
From more than 2,300 applications received through the #GoingTogether campaign, 100 projects were selected based on their potential to drive positive change, build creative communities, and enhance youth mental health and well-being. These projects, spanning diverse sectors including music, sports, and the arts, will receive grants ranging from US$5,000 to US$7,500 to implement their innovative ideas within their communities until October 2025.
In addition to financial support, UNESCO and Seventeen will provide project management training and mentorship opportunities. Social innovation experts will lead the training programs, while experienced professionals from various fields will serve as mentors. The winning project leaders will also actively participate in co-creating the training program.
Three outstanding youth-led initiatives from Indonesia have been selected as recipients of the UNESCO and Seventeen Youth Grant. They are MFC Beyond Football, a project that utilizes futsal as a platform to improve children's literacy skills; Fearless Creative Community, an initiative that empowers youth through arts and leadership development programs, and ART+, a project that focuses on the healing power of art, providing young people with a creative outlet for recovery and personal growth.
