The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) revealed on Sunday, 1 December 2024, that there are more than 415,000 people displaced in Gaza who are currently taking shelter in their school buildings. UNRWA shared on its social media the testimony of Aisha, one of the many women from Gaza who is also seeking refuge in the schools.
"This place is for learning, not for living," said Aisha as she expressed fatigue.
"We are suffering greatly due to the health conditions we are facing, the economic situation, the struggle to obtain food and water - there is no support, no assistance. Hundreds of thousands are also trying to survive even in dire conditions in temporary shelters," Aisha stated.
Israel launched a genocidal war in Gaza following cross-border attacks by the Palestinian Hamas group in October last year, resulting in the deaths of nearly 44,400 people.
Entering the second year of the genocide in Gaza, Israel has faced increasing international condemnation, with officials and agencies labeling the attacks and blockades on aid deliveries as a deliberate effort to destroy a population. On Friday, 28 November 2024, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) reported the closure of all bread shops in the central Gaza area due to severe supply shortages. This is amid Israel's ongoing genocide against the entire Gaza.
WFP stated that bread, which is a staple for many Palestinian families and the only food they can access, is now increasingly difficult to obtain for the residents of Gaza. The UN agency warned that "hunger remains a serious threat" to the people of Gaza, and urged for "safe and guaranteed access for vital humanitarian assistance to Gaza."
Since the start of Israel's invasion of Gaza in October 2023, various international groups and UN organizations have called for Israel to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid into the territory to prevent famine. On 21 November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
In addition, Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its deadly war in Gaza.
