TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US troops arrived at the scandal-plagued US naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, over the weekend, Anadolu reported, to set up an immigrant detention center ordered by President Donald Trump.

"At the direction of the President of the United States to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense, US forces arrived at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay this week," the Pentagon reported on Monday.

The Pentagon said the military personnel will join forces already present to assist in DHS-led operations against illegal immigrants.

A total of 150 personnel from the Marines and Army are currently at Guantanamo to help build the facility Trump wants to house about 30,000 undocumented immigrants.

That's a significant increase from the 780 detainees held there at the height of the US War on Terror.

Earlier Wednesday, Trump ordered the Pentagon to build a new detention facility for "the worst illegal immigrant criminals who pose a threat to the American people."

"Some of them are so bad that we don't even trust those countries to hold them, and because we don't want them to come back," he said.

The move adds to a costly last-minute task for the US military, as officials also try to fulfill a separate order from Trump to deploy more troops to the southern border.

Guantanamo is a notorious military prison where detainees were held, and often subjected to torture, for years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States.
