TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Governor of Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi, promises to resolve waste and pollution issues as soon as possible. Currently, he said, the final waste disposal site (TPA) in Bantargebang landfill, Bekasi City, has been filled with around 55 million tons of waste.
"Every day, the waste increases by approximately 8,000 tons," said Teguh at the 'Collaborative Waste Sorting' event in Gelora Bung Karno City Forest, Jakarta, on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
In the event organized by the Jakarta Government and the Ministry of Environment, Teguh mentioned that regulators are committed to sorting waste optimally, directly from its source. Sorting from upstream to downstream through an integrated waste management system.
So far, he continued, there have been various important regulations regarding waste reduction efforts, such as Governor Regulation Number 102 of 2021 Concerning Waste Management Obligations in Areas and Companies, as well as Governor's Decree Number 534 of 2022 on the Task Force for Waste that Easily Decomposes through Natural Processes.
He claimed that the government is also stepping up control of plastic waste, scheduled waste collection, as well as organic waste management and composting. "Next, there are various policies upstream, such as waste management programs based on neighborhood units, circular economy support through waste banks, and the establishment of recycling businesses or recycle centers in Pesanggrahan," Teguh said.
The majority of waste in Jakarta consists of food waste, beverages, plastics, and paper. Jakarta regulators are innovating together with the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) to utilize food leftovers before they become waste. "They can be used for the benefit of the community," he said.
