White House Says China Faces Up to 245% Tariff Rate

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe United States has announced that China is now facing new import tariffs of up to 245 percent as a result of its retaliatory measures, according to a statement from the White House.

In its recent announcement, the White House's latest administrative order has launched a national security investigation into the import of vital resources. The order also includes an explanation of the retaliatory tariffs announced on April 2, 2025.

"China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions," the White House said on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, as quoted from Anadolu.

"On Day One, President Trump initiated his America First Trade Policy to make America’s economy great again."

"More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals. As a result, the individualized higher tariffs are currently paused amid these discussions, except for China, which retaliated," it added.

"A few months ago, China banned exports to the United States of gallium, germanium, antimony, and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications. Just this week, China suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals, as well as rare earth magnets, in order to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world," the White House stated.

The statement did not provide detailed information on the applicable tariff rates in China. However, the White House implied that the tariffs could increase up to 245 percent.

China raised its tariffs on U.S. imports by up to 125 percent last Friday. The tariff hike was in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's decision, which effectively raised U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to 145 percent. The U.S. also temporarily suspended the levies for 90 days on goods from other countries.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Donald Trump has clarified his position on China. "The ball is in China's court. China needs to make a deal with us, we don’t have to make a deal with them. There’s no difference between China and any other country except that they are much larger," said Leavitt.

According to her, China, like any other country, is eyeing the U.S. market. "They need our money," Leavitt said.

Therefore, Leavitt stated that Trump is open to dialogue with China.

China responded to the latest U.S. import tariffs. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, as reported by the Global Times, urged the U.S. to abandon its wrong approach of using extreme pressure.

"China has repeatedly expressed its firm stance on the tariff issue. The tariff war was initiated by the U.S. If the United States truly wants to resolve issues through dialogue, it should stop exerting maximum pressure," he said.

He added that Beijing has taken necessary countermeasures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, as well as international fairness and justice, which are entirely reasonable and legitimate.

"Tariffs and trade wars have no winners. China does not want to engage in these wars but is not afraid of them."
