TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Health Organization or WHO warned of a health disaster situation in northern Gaza last Saturday. WHO highlighted the impact of Israeli military operations on health care facilities, especially the recent siege at the Kamal Adwan Hospital.
"Reports of damaged or destroyed hospital facilities and medical supplies during the siege are very distressing," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on X, as quoted from Anadolu, Sunday, October 27, 2024.
Ghebreyesus noted that 44 male staff members were detained by Israeli forces, leaving only female staff, the hospital director, and one male doctor to care for around 200 patients in critical need of medical attention.
"Every attack on health care facilities is a violation of international humanitarian law," he said.
Furthermore, Ghebreyesus called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by all parties as the only way to maintain the deteriorating health system in Gaza.
Anadolu reported that Israeli troops were reported to have withdrawn from the hospital after causing severe damage.
Kamal Adwan is one of the few remaining medical centers serving northern Gaza. The area became the site of over 820 Palestinian deaths during a 22-day military operation.
Israel has continued to launch devastating attacks in Gaza since last year's assault by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. Israel has disregarded UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire.
Almost 43,000 people have died since then, with most being women and children, and over 100,000 others injured. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its actions in Gaza.
