NATIONAL INFO - The Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Kemendesa PDT) aims to advance rural progress through empowered Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes).
The Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Kemendesa PDT) is working tirelessly to uplift rural areas across Indonesia. Central to these efforts is the initiative to strengthen Village-Owned Enterprises, known as BUMDes, which are envisioned as key drivers for economic and social development in Indonesian villages. Spearheaded by Yandri Susanto, the Minister of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions (Mendes PDT), this movement emphasizes innovation, self-sufficiency, and adaptability within the rural economy.
Yandri, recognizing the crucial role that BUMDes play in the prosperity of villages, has urged these entities to embrace creativity and innovation. His vision includes seeing BUMDes as essential contributors to the food supply chain for the government’s Free Nutritious Meal Program, an initiative launched by President Prabowo Subianto aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of rural communities. "Village-Owned Enterprises can serve as models for success,” Yandri remarked in a recent address during the BUMDes Institutional Strengthening Socialization event in Bengkulu on November 11, 2024. “Therefore, explore and maximize the potential of each village," he said.
BUMDes have the potential to meet local demand and generate surplus production that can be marketed both locally and beyond village borders. The shift toward a digital BUMDes ecosystem is seen as essential in accelerating growth in rural economies. Digital platforms allow BUMDes to not only reach a wider audience but also to efficiently manage resources, track inventory, and optimize the supply chain. Yandri has been vocal in encouraging stakeholders to support BUMDes in making this transition, suggesting that digitalizing these enterprises will contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Beyond digital transformation, Yandri has highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach, urging central and local governments, businesses, and community members to work together in supporting BUMDes initiatives. He has emphasized the need for comprehensive support measures that include funding, training, digital marketing assistance, and well-managed sales platforms. According to Yandri, such resources will not only boost BUMDes capabilities but also elevate village pride in their unique local products, showcasing the nation’s diverse heritage and potential.
During his visit to Bengkulu, Yandri praised the region's vast natural and cultural wealth, pointing out its potential as a model for rural development through BUMDes. With rich land resources and unique local products, Bengkulu embodies the promise of rural Indonesia. By mobilizing BUMDes to enhance productivity in harmony with the government’s vision of food self-sufficiency, Yandri believes rural economies like Bengkulu's can play a central role in national prosperity. “If the villages of Bengkulu unite in purpose, we will be on the path to achieving President Prabowo’s vision for national food self-sufficiency,” he said.
