TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consumers Organization (YLKI) urges the government to be stricter in monitoring the circulation of antibiotic drugs in the community. According to the Acting Chair of YLKI's Daily Board, Indah Suksmaningsih, 70 percent of antibiotic drugs currently circulating in the market are traded without a doctor's prescription.
"This proves that there is no strict supervision by the government. Thus, people are free to buy antibiotics without receiving an explanation of the dosage of use," said Indah in her official statement as quoted on Sunday, December 1, 2024.
She continued that based on YLKI's 2020 survey results, more than half of the respondents never consulted with a doctor before buying antibiotic drugs. And among the respondents who have bought, more than half of them stated that pharmacists or staff in pharmacies or drug stores did not ask for or require a doctor's prescription beforehand.
"The statement by the Head of POM Agency that revealed data on the use of antibiotics without a doctor's prescription is a warning of the danger of human resistance due to excessive antibiotic use," she said.
In addition, Indah also mentioned the use of antibiotic drugs in poultry. In YLKI's 2021 study, out of a total of 110 chicken carcasses tested, 80 percent of them were contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This indicates that many antibiotics are sold in the market without a doctor's prescription and are used in livestock, especially broiler chickens.
"Consumers will certainly be greatly disadvantaged if they consume chicken meat contaminated with these resistant bacteria," she said.
In response to this, YLKI requests the government to tighten supervision regarding the circulation of antibiotic drugs in the field. She also suggests the government to review regulations on the dispensing or purchase of antibiotics in pharmacies and drug stores. Especially the use of antibiotics in animal farming, which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) could be a source of a new pandemic due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
