TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 20 Indonesian citizens in Malaysia are facing the death penalty, confirmed Judha Nugraha, the Director of Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"We have recorded an additional 20 cases in Malaysia this year, with 15 being handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the remaining 5 by the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang," said Judha Nugraha in Jakarta, Thursday, December 5, 2024, as quoted from Antara.
To date, a total of 155 Indonesian convicts are facing the death penalty in foreign prisons, with the majority of them in Malaysia.
The ministry continues to provide consular assistance and legal aid for Indonesian nationals ensnared in legal cases and facing the death penalty in Malaysia.
"We have prepared lawyers to provide assistance and ensure their rights are fulfilled,” he said.
Judha urged Indonesian nationals working overseas to remain vigilant against the modus operandi of drug traffickers. He said the number of Indonesians facing the death penalty due to drug-related charges is on the rise.
Some of the methods used by drug traffickers, Judha explained, include entrusting the illicit goods to other people for delivery or establishing rapport to persuade their targets to become drug couriers.
In addition to the rampant drug trafficking, Judha said the ministry has freed 26 Indonesian nationals from the death sentence in several countries. One of them is an Indonesian national with the initials HMM who returned to the homeland on November 28 after the death sentence imposed on him for a murder case in Saudi Arabia was overturned and the prison sentence and fines were completed.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs encourages Indonesian nationals to comply with the legal system overseas to avoid serious penalties. "No matter how well we can free our citizens from the death penalty, a rapidly rising number of cases won’t be an ideal situation,” said Judha.
