TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The global interest in vacationing to beautiful islands has increased by up to 30 percent this year, according to the travel booking site Expedia. For those planning to vacation on an island and relax on the beach, the site has also released a list of the best islands in the world in the Islands Hot List 2025, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
This list of the world's most popular islands is based on data and traveler reviews from Expedia, as well as considerations of factors such as local accommodation rates, flight accessibility, safety, sustainability, and weather.
"Powered by real traveler data, the Expedia Island Hot List gives travelers the inspiration they need to plan a smarter island escape. Island adventurers want standout stays, affordable prices and seamless flight access," said Melanie Fish, head of public relations for the Expedia Group brand, in a press release, quoted from USA Today.
List of the Best Islands
Every island has its advantages. For example, Aruba is ranked at the top as the best place for sunbathing all year round. "Aruba’s arid landscapes and consistent sunshine make it a standout for 2025, blending outdoor adventure with relaxed Caribbean vibes and epic sunsets," wrote Expedia.
Meanwhile, Bali ranks second, as it is the best place for relaxation. Yogis and surfers have long visited Bali because it is known as a spiritually rooted place of stunning natural beauty. The island combines the charm of its green landscapes and iconic rice fields with a new wave of waste-free hospitality, health retreats, and cultural experiences in 2025.
Other islands include the Dominican Republic, which Expedia says is best for adventure; Fiji, which is best for community; Jamaica, which is best for culture; and Koh Samui in Thailand, which is best for affordable luxury.
Narin Tijayang, former executive director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Koh Samui Office, said this acknowledges the island's beautiful, pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and Koh Samui's vibrant island culture. "Stands ready to welcome travelers from around the world to experience the very best of Thai island life," he said, as quoted from Travel+Leisure.
The Maldives is also on the list due to its reputation as the best island for romance. Meanwhile, Oahu in Hawaii is considered the best island for surfing; Paros, Greece, is considered the best island for nightlife; and Sardinia, Italy, is considered the best island for culinary enthusiasts.
Best Time for an Island Vacation
Expedia notes that the "optimal time" to visit each place varies; however, if a closer location is needed, September is the best month to take a vacation on an island. Typically, this off-peak season is the peak season for island destinations, offering more affordable prices and a wider variety of hotel room options.
