TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The first round of the Indonesia vs Japan match in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian Zone ended with a score of 0-2 for the Blue Samurai team. The match was played at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Friday, November 15, 2024.
From the beginning, the Blue Samurai team seemed to dominate the ball. They made several penetrations before reaching Maarten Paes' penalty area. Japan's national team continued to attack until the 8th minute. However, the attack turned into an opportunity for the defense to clear the ball forward when it was intercepted and fell to the feet of an Indonesian national team player, creating the first opportunity.
The ball bounced out of Paes' box and was immediately met by Ragnar Oratmangoen. However, Ragnar was unable to convert his effort into a goal. As predicted, Japan regained possession of the ball.
Indonesia's second chance came from the right flank when Yakob Sayuri successfully stole the ball from the Blue Samurai. In the 13th minute, Yakob passed the ball to Kevin Diks, who ran forward while controlling the ball and then passed it to the middle. However, Rafael Struick was unable to finish the ball.
In the 22nd minute, Japan recovered from a counterattack and sent the ball towards Paes' goal, but the FC Dallas goalkeeper made the save. Paes had to make another save a minute later.
As the first half progressed, the Garuda team managed to even up the possession in the 25th minute. The Blue Samurai team often played in the middle of the field. In the 35th minute, Koki Ogawa scored against Paes after Japan penetrated the Indonesian defense. He took advantage of a pass from Daichi Kamada.
After the first goal, the Japanese team regained control of the ball and made it 2-0 in the 40th minute with a quick and powerful shot from Takumi Minamino.
Coach Shin Tae-yong immediately replaced Kevin Diks with Sandy Walsh. There was little change in the game pattern after that, with the Japanese team continuing to dominate possession and making several penetrations until the three minutes of extra time expired.
