TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A fire engulfed the Terra Drone office building on Cempaka Baru, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, killing 22 people, authorities confirmed.
Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Commissioner Grand Susatyo Purnomo Condro, said the number of fatalities had reached 22 as of 06:00 PM local time.
“There are 22 victims. Seven men and 15 women,” he told reporters at the scene on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was first reported by residents at around 12:43 PM A total of 28 fire trucks were deployed to tackle the blaze. Firefighters managed to extinguish the flames by 03:00 PM, while the evacuation of victims continued until around 05:00 PM.
Police have launched a criminal investigation to determine whether negligence or other violations contributed to the deadly incident. The authorities will summon the building owner and responsible executives of PT Terra Drone for questioning.
“We will communicate with and question the building owner and company officials,” said Adjunct Commissioner Roby Saputra, Head of the Central Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Unit, on Tuesday night.
Six people, consisting of four employees and two HR staff, have been questioned so far. Roby said investigators are examining potential safety failures by the operator, management, or building owner.
“We are still probing whether criminal elements are involved in this case, including possible negligence,” he stated.
Earlier, Susatyo indicated that a drone battery overheating on one of the floors may have triggered the fire. However, the exact cause remains under investigation by the National Police forensic laboratory.
Police are also reviewing the completeness of the building’s operational and safety permits as part of the inquiry.
All the victims’ bodies have been transferred to East Jakarta's Kramat Jati Police Hospital for identification.
Emergency crews continue working at the scene as the investigation moves forward.
