TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake struck the north coast of Wondama Bay Regency in West Papua at midnight on Friday, October 25, 2024. The quake with an updated magnitude of 5.0 hit just 22 minutes into Friday at 00:22 a.m. local time.
"It is a type of shallow earthquake due to active faults," according to BMKG's official statement post-earthquake.
The earthquake was centered at sea, 55 kilometers northwest of Wondama Bay, at a 10-kilometer depth. BMKG said the tremor had a strike-slip movement.
Based on the shake map, the earthquake was felt in the Wondama Bay area with an intensity scale of II-III MMI. People inside houses felt the earthquake, akin to trucks passing by. The BMKG team confirmed that this tremor poses no tsunami potential.
"No aftershock is detected until 00:55 a.m. local time," said BMKG.
