TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourist scams are common at major destinations worldwide, including the Taj Mahal in Agra, India. This iconic white marble mausoleum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws thousands of visitors daily and is often targeted by fraudsters.
If you plan to visit the Taj Mahal soon, here are the most common scams you should be aware of, as reported by Times of India:
1. Fake Tour Guides
One of the most frequent scams involves unofficial tour guides. As soon as you arrive, you may be approached by people in uniform claiming to be government-certified guides.
These individuals often carry fake IDs and charge inflated fees, offering misleading or incorrect information. To avoid this, only hire guides through the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) ticket office and ask to see their official ASI-issued ID.
2. Taxi and Tuk-Tuk Traps
Drivers of rickshaws, tuk-tuks, or taxis may insist on taking you to local shops or emporiums, where they earn commissions — even if you never asked for it. Be firm and say no to unsolicited stops. It’s best to agree on a fare beforehand or use official prepaid transport services.
3. Fake Tickets
Scammers may offer “discounted” or fast-track tickets outside the gate. These are usually reused or counterfeit tickets sold to unsuspecting tourists.
Always buy your entry tickets from the official ASI website or government counters. Note that tickets for Indian nationals and foreigners are sold separately.
4. Photographer Scams
Some photographers promise to deliver high-quality prints within an hour, charging high prices upfront. Tourists often receive poor-quality photos, or none at all.
If you use a local photographer, ask for samples or reviews first. Better yet, use your own camera or smartphone.
5. Overpriced and Fake Souvenirs
Vendors often claim their souvenirs, especially marble ones, are made from authentic 'Makrana marble', the same used in the Taj Mahal. These items are usually fake and sold at outrageous prices. To be safe, only shop at government-approved souvenir stores near the site.
