TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochammad Irfan Yusuf stated that the cost of the 144 Hijriah Hajj flight increased due to high global oil prices, amounting to Rp1.77 trillion. The surge in costs is the figure proposed by the airlines.
Irfan explained that the cost increase was triggered by the surge in avtur prices and fluctuations in exchange rates, significantly affecting the financing structure of hajj flights. Garuda Indonesia proposed an increase of up to Rp978 billion, while Saudi Airlines set the cost at Rp802.8 billion.
"In aggregate, the total cost has risen from Rp6.69 trillion to 8.46 trillion, an increase of Rp1.77 trillion," said Irfan during a work meeting with the House of Representatives of Commission VIII at the Parliament Building, Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
On the occasion, Irfan assured that the increase in hajj flight costs would not be passed on to pilgrims. The government is currently exploring various financing alternatives to cover the cost difference.
Irfan stated that two financing options are being prepared specifically for pilgrimage flight costs, which are sourced from the Hajj Worship Implementation Cost (BPIH). Then, the flight costs of the group officials will be taken from the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN).
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah still needs to coordinate with the Attorney General's Office to ensure the status of force majeure and the legality of the financing sources. "There are several alternatives, all are ready, it's just a matter of how our coordination with the Attorney General's office will be regarding the status and legality of the financing sources," said Irfan.
Indonesian hajj pilgrims are scheduled to depart for the Holy Land starting April 22, 2026. The departures are divided into two waves, with the first wave heading to Medina and the second wave directly to Jeddah.
