TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dozens of Hamas leaders and members were killed by the regime of ousted Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported, citing sources close to the movement.

The sources told the London-based newspaper that 94 Hamas members were executed in Syrian prisons without trial, as reported by Middle East Monitor.

They added that intelligence documents found in the offices of the Syrian security agencies after the ouster of the Bashar Al-Assad regime confirmed the continued existence of orders to arrest anyone associated with Hamas.

Despite the reconciliation between Hamas and the Assad regime two years ago, the Assad regime continues to label Hamas a “treasonous organization”.

The sources also denied that any prisoners had been released, including Al Qassam Brigades commander Mamoun Al-Jaloudi, known as Abu Judat.

According to the sources, Hamas had handed over the list of prisoners to the former Secretary-General of Hezbollah, the late Hassan Nasrallah, after he promised to follow up on the matter with senior officials in the regime.

However, the sources indicated that Nasrallah did not provide any information to Hamas.

Nasrallah is believed to have known that all those listed had been executed, fearing that this disclosure would derail the reconciliation process, which, according to the sources, never really progressed. The Assad regime, they explained, only agreed to a superficial reconciliation under pressure from its allies, Iran and Hezbollah.

The sources further noted that all communication between the Assad regime and Hamas stopped in October 2023. Damascus did not issue any condolences after Israel targeted and killed Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Saleh Al-Arouri.

Assad ousted, Hamas congratulates Syrian people

The report makes it clear why Hamas congratulated the Syrian people on achieving their “aspirations for freedom and justice” when Assad was ousted. Meanwhile, Hezbollah and Iran have condemned the ouster.

“We stand firmly with the Syrian people… and respect the will, independence and political choices of the Syrian people,” the Islamist faction that has ruled the Gaza Strip said in a statement, as quoted by Reuters.

Hamas said it hoped that a post-Assad Syria would continue its “historical and important role in supporting the Palestinian people.”

In a separate statement, Ziad al-Nakhala, the head of Islamic Jihad, an Iran-backed group and Hamas ally, echoed the sentiment.

“Islamic Jihad hopes that Syria will remain a real support for the Palestinian people, their struggle, as it has always been,” Nakhala said.

Hamas openly supported the 2011 Sunni Muslim street uprising against Assad's rule and evacuated its Damascus headquarters in 2012, a move that angered Iran, an ally of Assad and the Palestinians.

Hamas, whose ideological roots trace back to the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, distanced itself from Assad - a member of the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam - as he cracked down on mostly Sunni protesters and rebels.

The Palestinian group decided in 2022 to restore ties with Assad's government and sent a delegation to Damascus, where Hamas leaders met with Assad in hopes of improving ties.

Assad's Syria and Iran have formed an "axis of resistance" with Lebanon's Hezbollah movement and Palestinian militant groups to oppose Israel.
