TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the first quarter of the 21st century, Billboard recently published its report on the greatest pop star. While Taylor Swift dominates the industry in terms of albums and tours, Beyoncé Knowles was crowned as the greatest pop star of the 21st century.
“But when you’re talking about greatness, and when you’re talking about greatness for the 21st century specifically, no one has a longer or fuller track record than Beyoncé,” stated Billboard.
Her influence on the music industry is undeniable, from her early days in the late 1990s to her continued success today, 25 years later.
Beginning her career as a teenager with the pop-R&B group Destiny's Child, Beyoncé and the group rose to prominence with hits including Bills, Bills, Bills and Jumpin' Jumpin’. In particular, the iconic hit Say My Name positioned itself as a marker in the group’s career, debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 18, 2000.
Despite facing internal challenges such as lineup changes and the transition from a quartet to a trio, Destiny's Child maintained their place at the top of the music industry in an era dominated by boy bands and solo superstars.
Since her time with Destiny's Child, Beyoncé has solidified her reputation as a leading female artist. She has consistently captivated audiences with her powerful vocals, electrifying stage performances, iconic costumes, and innovative vision.
Over the course of 25 years, Queen Bey has earned 12 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, starting with her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love. Her more recent hits, such as Texas Hold ’Em and Break My Soul, showcase her continued relevance in the industry. Beyoncé has also collaborated with top artists, including Ed Sheeran on Perfect and Megan Thee Stallion on Savage, both of which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Houston-born singer has also had 10 albums reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, from Destiny's Child’s Survivor in 2001 to her 2024 album Cowboy Carter.
Known as the most Grammy-winning artist of all time, the superstar also boasts 32 Grammys which became a testament to her dedication in all aspects of her work. A collection of Grammys that includes Best Music Video, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Album of the Year, is just a glimpse of the recognition she has received from the industry.
Beyond the charts and awards, Beyoncé’s world tours have been a crucial platform for showcasing her work. Each tour presents unique concepts and designs, all of which have been consistently extraordinary. Her Renaissance Tour, in particular, became a global sensation, celebrated for its captivating notion, from stunning outfit changes to exquisite stage production.
“With every album, every single, every music video, every live performance, every photo shoot and promo campaign and release strategy over the last quarter-century, she has pursued excellence thoroughly and relentlessly, and the number of times where she’s notably fallen short in that pursuit doesn’t even approach double digits,” as Billboard said in awe of the iconic Beyoncé.
Beyoncé’s top spot as the greatest pop star of the 21st century is closely followed by Taylor Swift in second place. Rihanna, Adele, Drake, and Lady Gaga round out the top five on Billboard's list of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century.
