TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has identified three tropical cyclone seeds forming in the vicinity of Indonesia, prompting extreme weather potential across several regions.
The Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani stated that based on observations from the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) Jakarta until 7:00 a.m. local time today, the three active systems include tropical cyclone seed 90S in the Indian Ocean south of Banten-West Java, tropical cyclone seed 93S northwest of mainland Australia, and tropical cyclone seed 92P in the Carpentaria Gulf south of South Papua.
"We are monitoring the movements of these three cyclone seeds intensely 24 hours a day. We urge the public to remain calm but to increase awareness of potential indirect impacts, such as floods or strong winds. Make sure to only refer to official BMKG channels to avoid misinformation and hoaxes," said Faisal in a written statement on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Acting Deputy of Meteorology at BMKG Andri Ramdhani stated that based on the latest analysis, cyclone seed 90S has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next two days. The other seeds, 93S and 92P, have a low probability, but overall still have indirect impacts on Indonesia's weather and waters.
"The emergence of these three cyclone seeds increases the air pressure gradient, strengthening surface wind speed, and triggering the convergence of air masses. This condition is reinforced by warm sea surface temperatures in the southern and eastern Indonesian waters, as well as the formation of wind convergence along Bali to East Nusa Tenggara," he said.
The impacts of the active atmospheric dynamic systems include the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall in the regions of Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara.
In addition, there is a potential for strong winds in Bali, Yogyakarta, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Lampung, Maluku, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and the southern coast of South Papua.
Furthermore, the Acting Director of Public Meteorology Ida Pramuwardani added that the increase in wind speed around the systems also affects the marine conditions. Residents are urged to remain cautious of high wave potential. BMKG warns of wave heights of 1.25-2.5 meters in the Flores Sea, Banda Sea, Sunda Strait, and the western Indian Ocean by the Mentawai Islands.
The public also needs to be wary of high waves (2.5-4 meters) that may occur in the western Indian Ocean from Bengkulu to Lampung, southern Banten to Bali, the Sawu Sea, southern West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, and the Arafura Sea.
With the active presence of these three cyclone seed systems, BMKG advises the public to increase awareness of the potential for heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, as well as anticipate the possibility of hydrometeorological impacts such as flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Fishers and users of maritime transportation are advised to pay attention to forecasts of wave height before engaging in sailing activities.
