TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A shooting at a high school in Kahramanmaras, Turkey (Turkiye), on Wednesday left nine people dead. Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci, as quoted by Anadolu and reported by Antara, said the incident also left 13 others injured, six of whom are in critical condition.
Kahramanmaras Governor Mukerrem Unluer said the attack was carried out by an eighth-grade male student at Ayser Calik High School for reasons that remain unknown.
The perpetrator carried a firearm in his backpack and then fired indiscriminately after entering two classrooms, he said. Six of the injured are still undergoing surgery and remain in critical condition.
The suspected perpetrator died in the incident, Unluer said, though it remains unclear whether he took his own life or was injured in the ensuing chaos.
Governor Unluer said the weapon likely belonged to the perpetrator’s father, a former police officer. The perpetrator reportedly arrived at the school carrying five firearms and seven magazines.
Kahramanmara Chief Prosecutor Ramazan Murat Tiryaki said the investigation is ongoing, with three deputy chief prosecutors and four prosecutors involved.
“Three deputy chief public prosecutors and four public prosecutors have been assigned to the investigation. Our chief public prosecutor and the assigned prosecutors are continuing their work at the scene,” said Justice Minister Akin Gurlek via the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.
According to an official statement, Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and relevant officials immediately traveled to the scene after receiving information about the incident.
Meanwhile, Turkey’s Director of Communications, Burhanettin Duran, stated via the X platform that all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly investigated by the authorities, and all necessary measures are being taken.
Given that this incident affects minors and their families, Duran urged both traditional and digital media to be mindful of the language used in their reporting.
Media coverage restrictions have been imposed to ensure the integrity of the investigation, and media companies are asked to respect the confidentiality of the ongoing process, he said, while assuring that updates will be provided periodically.
Interior Minister Ciftci announced that educational activities in Kahramanmaras have been suspended for two days in the wake of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice stated that it has taken legal action against individuals who support violence, justify the perpetrators’ attacks, spread panic, and disseminate misleading information on social media and digital platforms.
In its statement, the ministry said that digital activity following the attack continues to be closely monitored by the relevant authorities across all 81 provinces of Turkey, with coordination established with 171 criminal courts.
The ministry has confirmed that the operation will be carried out in coordination with relevant law enforcement agencies, with arrests and searches to be conducted against individuals suspected of sharing criminal content on their social media accounts.
