TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a 5.0-magnitude earthquake this morning, Monday, November 18, 2024, at 6:01 a.m. Jakarta Time, in the Pacific Ocean region in Sarmi, Papua.
“The earthquake’s epicenter is located at 1.60 Southern Latidue and 139.48 Longitude East, 85 kilometers northeast of Sarmi City at 10-kilometer depth,” said BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center Director, Daryono, through a written statement on Monday.
Daryono said the earthquake is categorized as intermediate tremors due to active fault activities with strike-slip movement.
Based on the estimated shake map, Daryono said this quake caused shaking in the Bonggo region in Sarmi with an intensity scale of II MMI, meaning only some people felt the tremors which caused hanging objects to sway.
There have been no reports of structural damages caused by the quake, Daryono said. “'Modeling results show that the earthquake has no tsunami potential,” he said.
Until 6:45 a.m., BMKG did not detect any aftershocks.
