TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has partnered with PT Environmental Intelligence Indonesia or Tomorrow Indonesia, an information platforms provider, in developing an artificial intelligence-based weather forecasting system.
BMKG's Public Meteorology Director, Andri Ramdhani, said that this partnership covers scientific and technical collaboration in meteorology, human resource capacity development, and the provision of data and supporting technology.
"It can improve the accuracy of information in meteorology, for public, maritime, and aviation weather," said Andri in a written statement on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
According to Andri, BMKG plays an important role in disaster management through the early detection of developmental systems and increasing coordination between agencies. There is also a target to collaborate with the private sector and the public, as established with Tomorrow Indonesia.
Both parties agreed to a memorandum of understanding regarding the weather information systems strengthening last Tuesday, February 4.
"To realize more effective disaster mitigation," said Andri.
President Director of Tomorrow Indonesia, Muhammad Fitriansyah, said that BMKG's ground sensor network and expertise will be combined with the information processed by Tomorrow Indonesia's weather intelligence platform. The company, which also adopts AI, will rely on high-resolution satellites to monitor weather and the atmosphere.
"This partnership will help enhance Indonesia's capacity in predicting, preparing, and mitigating the risks of extreme weather," he said.
Another approach is to assist the agricultural sector, especially in increasing productivity and preserving crops. The results of the collaboration between BMKG and Tomorrow Indonesia are also targeted to boost the preparedness of industry players in facing disaster risks.
