BMKG: M6.1 Earthquake Shakes Central Sulawesi's Palu

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAn earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook Palu, Central Sulawesi, and its surrounding regions on Tuesday night, January 28, 2025, at around 9:53 p.m., Jakarta Time. 

According to information reported on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) website, the land-based tremor has an epicenter of 42 kilometers southeast of Parigi Moutong, Central Sulawesi.

The earthquake occurred at 91 kilometers deep with coordinates of 0.53 Northern Latitude and 121.18 Longitude East.

"Be careful of subsequent aftershocks," wrote BMKG on its website on Tuesday, January 28.

This earthquake was felt in Palu and surrounding cities, with scales varying from II to IV MMI. Earthquake vibrations with a scale of II-III MMI were felt in Bone Bolango Regency; a scale of III MMI was felt in Gorontalo Regency, Gorontalo City, Sigi, Parigi, and North Gorontalo Regency. Meanwhile, the IV MMI scale was felt in Toli-toli.

In the III MMI scale, vibrations are felt clearly by people inside houses, akin to trucks passing by. For the IV MMI scale, an earthquake's shaking is felt by many people inside and outside of houses. The vibrations could break potteries, windows or doors would creak, and walls would make noises.
