TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Earthquakes shook several parts of West Java, including the Cianjur region on Friday afternoon, November 15, 2024. An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.3 was recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) precisely at 3:38 p.m.
Based on BMKG's analysis, the earthquake originated from 6.78 degrees South Latitude and 107.28 degrees East Longitude. "Located on land 16-kilometer northeast of the center of Cianjur Regency," said the Head of Tangerang BMKG Region II, Hartanto, in a written statement.
The earthquake's epicenter was shallow at a depth of 4 kilometers, caused by an active fault activity. The tremors were felt in Cipatat, Cirata, Cipeundeuy, Rajamandala, Cipeuyem, and Cikalong Wetan at the intensity scale of II-III MMI.
At that scale, the vibration was felt by several people and made light hanging objects swing. The earthquake could also be distinctly felt inside houses, liken to trucks passing by.
Previously, at noon today, precisely at 12:38 p.m., a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 3.9 shook the neighboring region of Cianjur, namely Sukabumi. The earthquake originated 83 kilometers in the sea southeast of the center of Sukabumi Regency.
The Indonesian Ocean quake was shallow at a 16-kilometer depth, due to fault activity on the sea floor and shook the Cibeber (Cianjur) and Jampang Kulon (Sukabumi) areas on the intensity scale of III MMI.
BMKG has recorded four earthquakes of which tremors could be felt throughout the day. Two earthquakes occurred earlier in the day with respective magnitudes of M4.8 and M5.3 in Enggano, Bengkulu, and Tanggamus, Lampung. They occurred each at 1:40 a.m. and 2:08 a.m., respectively.
Many people felt the earthquake in Enggano, as they were recorded at the III-IV MMI intensity scale, shaking windows and doors.
The Director of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, mentioned that the earthquake occurred in a megathrust zone, 25 kilometers northwest of Enggano, at a depth of 42 kilometers. "The earthquake is due to subduction plate activity," he said.
The earthquake in Tanggamus, according to BMKG, caused tremors felt on the scale of II-III MMI, originating 102 kilometers southwest of Tanggamus, at a depth of 74 kilometers in the sea.
