TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake struck the North Maluku region on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 10:12:31 AM WIB (Indonesian Western Time).

BMKG's analysis results show that the earthquake has an updated parameter of M6.0 magnitude. The earthquake's epicenter is located at coordinates 1.66°N and 127.09°E, or precisely in the sea, 65 kilometers northeast of West Halmahera, North Maluku, at a depth of 92 kilometers.

"Considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred is a shallow type of earthquake caused by the intraslab activity of the Maluku Sea Plate," said Daryono, Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG, in his statement on Wednesday.

"The source mechanism analysis results show that the earthquake has an oblique thrust (upward shear) movement mechanism," he added.

This earthquake was felt in the Sofifi area with an intensity scale of IV MMI, which means it was felt by many people inside buildings during the day. In Manado, it was felt with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, meaning the tremor was felt inside buildings, similar to the vibration caused by a passing truck.

In the areas of Tondano, Ternate, Weda, Batangdua, Ibu, Kotamobagu, Galela, and Jailolo, the earthquake was felt with an intensity scale of III MMI, meaning the tremor was felt inside buildings, similar to the vibration caused by a passing truck. In the North Minahasa area, it was felt with an intensity scale of II MMI, meaning the tremor was felt by a few people, and light objects hanging would sway.

The modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have tsunami potential. As of 10:35 AM WIB, BMKG's monitoring has not shown any aftershock activity.

Daryono urged the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified rumors. "To avoid buildings that have cracked or been damaged by the earthquake," he said.
