TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai said the number of inmates who will be granted amnesty by Prabowo’s administration is subject to change as the assessment is still underway. The government is previously set to pardon over 44,000 inmates.
“The figures could go up or down as the Ministry of Justice is still conducting the assessment. We cannot lock the number down at 44,000,” he said in a working meeting with House’s Commission XIII at the parliament building, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
According to Pigai, the ministry is still conducting an eligibility review for the inmates, with consideration of the inmates’ crimes and their times of release from prison.
Pigai said inmates’ amnesty plan could be revoked if they are, for example, involved in another pending criminal case, or slated for an early conditional release.
"After the assessment by the Ministry of Justice, the candidates will be submitted to the House of Representatives by the Indonesian president,” he said, referring to the pardon.
The government announced the plan to pardon 44,000 inmates at the end of last year. President Prabowo Subianto discussed this issue in a limited meeting with Minister of Justice Supratman Andi Agtas, Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin on Friday, December 13, 2024.
After the limited meeting, Supratman said approximately 44 thousand inmates meet the criteria for amnesty grant, based on the data collected by the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections.
