TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of potential high waves in several Indonesian waters on November 27–30, 2024.
BMKG forecaster Ivana Gabriella stated that tropical cyclone 96S was observed in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sumatra, which influences the wind speed and wave height in several Indonesian waters.
The wind in the northern part of Indonesia shifts from northeast to southeast with speeds ranging from 8 to 30 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia, the wind moves southeast to southwest with speeds ranging from 8 to 25 knots.
"The highest wind speed is observed in the Malacca Strait and the western Indian Ocean off Sumatra," she said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
This condition has caused 1.25-2.5 meters high waves to potentially emerge in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the western Indian Ocean off Sinabang - Bengkulu Islands, southern Indian Ocean off Java - NTT, North Natuna Sea, the Java Sea, the southern part of the Makassar Strait, and the Sulawesi Sea.
Similar high waves may occur in the western part of the Flores Sea, the northern part of the Maluku Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean off Maluku, the northern Pacific Ocean off Southwest Papua, the northern Pacific Ocean off West Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean off Papua.
Higher waves in the range of 2.5-4.0 meters may occur in the western Indian Ocean off Aceh, the North Natuna Sea, the western Indian Ocean off Lampung, and the southern Indian Ocean off Bali - NTB.
"The potential for high waves in these areas may pose risks to maritime safety," she said.
Accordingly, BMKG advises citizens to remain alert, especially fishers, for wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters. Barges are urged to avoid working amid wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters.
As for ferries, BMKG cautioned them of wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. For large vessels, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, avoid wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave heights above 4.0 meters.
"We urge coastal communities to remain vigilant of high waves,” the BMKG forecaster said.
