TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a strong warning to the public regarding the potential for extreme weather events during the upcoming Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holiday season.

Dwikorita Karnawati, the agency’s head, emphasized the heightened risk of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods, flash floods, and landslides, due to a confluence of weather patterns. “Therefore, we urge the public to be cautious of the potential extreme weather that can lead to hydro-meteorological disasters in Indonesia, especially during the Nataru 2024/2025 period,” Dwikorita warned in a press release.

The BMKG has identified several contributing factors, including the La Nina phenomenon, which is expected to increase rainfall by 40%. Furthermore, the agency is closely monitoring the influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Cold Surges moving from the Asian mainland toward western Indonesia. These atmospheric disturbances can significantly intensify rainfall across the archipelago.

“This year, we are facing not just one factor, there is MJO, Cold Surge, weak La Nina, and the peak of the rainy season in Java and southern Sumatra,” Dwikorita explained, highlighting the unique confluence of weather patterns.

Deputy Climatology of BMKG, Ardhasena, further highlighted the impact of warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures, which can exacerbate wet weather conditions across Indonesia. “In general, the peak of the Rainy Season 2024/2025 is predicted to occur from November 2024 to February 2025,” Ardhasena said.

The BMKG urged the public to stay informed about weather conditions through the @infobmkg application. This platform provides real-time updates on weather forecasts, including the potential for extreme weather events, earthquakes, and other natural hazards.
