Brazilian President Applauds Indonesia's Global Role Since the Bandung Asia-Africa Conference

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of Brazil Luiz Incio Lula da Silva lauded Indonesia's role in pushing for a fair world order while welcoming the visit of President Prabowo Subianto to the Planalto Palace in Brasilia on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

In a joint press statement at the Planalto Palace, Lula referred to Indonesia as a long-time friend with a crucial role in the history of the struggle of developing countries to establish a more just and equal world order.

According to Lula, Indonesia has played a historic role in igniting the spirit of the global south's struggle since the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955.

"Seventy years ago, at the Bandung Conference, Indonesia raised the banner of the struggle for a more just international order," Lula said, as quoted from the official release of the Presidential Secretariat on July 9, 2025.

President Lula also appreciated President Prabowo's firm stance at the BRICS Summit 2025, which criticized the use of force in international relations and emphasized the importance of upholding international law. He emphasized that Indonesia and Brazil play an important role in promoting world peace.

"Like Brazil, Indonesia has always stated that dialogue is the only way out of the war in Ukraine. I thank President Prabowo for Indonesia's participation in the Peace Friends group proposed by China and Brazil," he said.

President Lula also highlighted the shared vision of Indonesia and Brazil in combating poverty, hunger, and climate change. He praised Prabowo's free nutritious meal program as one of the free meal programs for pregnant and lactating mothers, toddlers, and school children.

"The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, formed during Brazil's G20 Presidency, will help realize this plan. I convey to President Prabowo Brazil's experience in the National School Feeding Program, PNAE, a global reference on the subject," said Lula.

Through its relationship with Indonesia, President Lula expressed the desire to strengthen relations between South America and Southeast Asia.

In this bilateral meeting, Indonesia and Brazil agreed on various global geopolitical issues, particularly related to efforts to resolve conflicts and reform international governance.

"In the current international geopolitical situation, we are fully in line with President Lula's thinking, and I hope we can continue to coordinate several important initiatives that we need to take together," said Prabowo.

Regarding the resolution of world conflicts, the Head of State affirmed Indonesia's support for Brazil's approach in promoting peaceful resolutions in conflict areas. Regarding Ukraine, Prabowo expressed his support for Brazil's idea regarding the role of the Friends Group in pushing for a real ceasefire.

"Regarding the Middle East, once again, we highly appreciate your strong stance on the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. And also that the only solution is a two-state solution, and we greatly appreciate your strong stance on this," he said.

Furthermore, Prabowo expressed his support for reforming global governance, particularly within the United Nations (UN) system. The Head of State also emphasized the importance of increasing the representation of new major countries in the international community.

"I think we should play a more responsible and leading role, and I think we should combine our efforts, unite our voices to push for this reform together with other countries such as India, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Germany, Japan, and Mexico," said Prabowo.
