TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli military unilaterally violated the ceasefire on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, by bombarding Gaza. As reported by Reuters and Al Jazeera, medical officials reported that at least 100 people were killed in a series of the most brutal airstrikes since the ceasefire began on January 19.
Children were among the dozens of Palestinians killed and many injured in the Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.
At least five people were killed and others injured when Israeli fighter jets bombed the Al-Tabi'in School, a place where displaced people were taking shelter in the Al-Daraj neighborhood in downtown Gaza City.
Several people also died and were injured in Israel's attacks on refugees in tents in the Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.
A senior Hamas official accused Israel of unilaterally canceling the ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli army did not provide further details about the attack, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office released a statement saying the military had been instructed to "take decisive action against the terrorist organization Hamas."
"This follows Hamas' repeated refusal to release our hostages, as well as its rejection of all proposals it has received from the US President's Envoy Steve Witkoff," the statement claimed.
"Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increased military force."
Three houses were hit in Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza, a building in Gaza City, and targets in Khan Younis and Rafah, according to medical personnel and witnesses.
The Palestinian civil emergency services said there were at least 35 airstrikes in Gaza.
The escalating violence comes amid disagreement between Israel and Hamas on how to uphold the three-phase ceasefire that began in January.
Arab mediators, supported by the United States, have so far been unable to bridge the differences between the warring parties in talks held over the past two weeks.
Based on the ceasefire agreement on January 19, there are three stages of ceasefire. Israel and Hamas have been engaged in mediated negotiations after Israel refused to enter the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, intended to start after the first phase, which lasted for six weeks.
Israel insists on extending the first stage by releasing more hostages, but refuses to leave Gaza as required in the second stage of the ceasefire.
