TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - British historian Peter Carey believes that Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is not serious in responding to the issue of plagiarism involving history lecturer Sri Margana. He made this statement in response to the conclusion of the UGM ad hoc team, which claimed that there were no elements of plagiarism in Sri Margana's work.
"If there is no plagiarism, why did they agree back then to the request of KPG to withdraw and destroy the first and second prints of the Madiun history books?" said Peter Carey to Tempo through a short message on Sunday, November 24, 2024.
The books in question are 'Madiun: Political History and Government Transformation from the 14th Century to the 21st Century' and 'Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III, Regent of Madiun 1796-1810: A Political Biography.' Both books are considered to extensively quote Peter's book 'Kuasa Ramalan' published by Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia.
According to Peter, if UGM takes this issue seriously, they should acknowledge that plagiarism has occurred and apologize during the mediation that took place in February 2020.
Meanwhile, KPG's senior editor Candra Gautama stated that this case has become a public issue. "Let the public judge UGM's clarification," said Candra Gautama when contacted by Tempo on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
He mentioned that the clarification issued by KPG on November 4, 2024, already effectively summarized all the necessary information for the public to judge whether plagiarism has occurred or not.
In the clarification signed by Christina Udiani as the Editorial and Production Manager, KPG also attached evidence of alleged plagiarism against the book 'Kuasa Ramalan.' These pieces of evidence included comparisons of the first and second prints of the book and 'Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III, Regent of Madiun 1796-1810: A Political Biography,' as well as comparisons of the second and third prints of 'Madiun: Political History and Government Transformation from the 14th Century to the 21st Century.'
According to Candra, if the ad hoc team conducts a fair investigation, they should also announce who the members of the ad hoc team, formed by Dean of FIB UGM Setiadi, are. It is worth noting that Setiadi was present during the mediation in 2020.
Furthermore, Candra also mentioned that UGM never invited KPG to provide explanations since the ad hoc team was formed. "KPG wants the academic world to regain its credibility. Academic matters are everyone's responsibility," he said.
Prior to this, Setiadi stated in an official statement that the citations in the two books written by Sri Margana and others were in accordance with standards. "The ad hoc team concluded that both books cannot be categorized as plagiarism," said Dean of FIB UGM, Setiadi, in his official statement on Friday, November 15, 2024.
