China Says US Blockade in Strait of Hormuz Will Not Solve Crisis

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China has said that the United States’ reported decision to blockade ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz following failed negotiations in Islamabad will not resolve the crisis.

The root cause of the disruption at the Strait of Hormuz is the military conflict. To solve the issue, the conflict must stop as soon as possible. All parties need to remain calm and exercise restraint. China will continue playing a constructive role,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press conference in Beijing on Monday, as quoted by Antara.

He added that the Strait of Hormuz is a vital international trade route for goods and energy.

Keeping the area safe and stable and ensuring unimpeded passage serves the common interest of the international community,” he said.

Guo urged all parties to remain calm and exercise restraint, adding that China would continue to play a constructive role.

On Sunday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it would begin a maritime blockade on Monday at 14:00 local time, or 09:00 PM WIB, following an order from President Donald Trump after negotiations between Washington and Tehran failed.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the blockade would be enforced “impartially” against all vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas, including ports in the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Regarding oil purchases, China said it stands ready to work with other parties to jointly safeguard global energy security and maintain stable supply chains.

“We are ready to cooperate with other parties to jointly maintain global energy security and ensure the stability of the supply chain. However, to fundamentally resolve this issue, the first and foremost step is to restore peace and stability in the Gulf and the Middle East," Guo said.
