TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 1,200 former Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) from the former Surakarta, Semarang and Kedu Residency declared the dissolution of the organization and declared their return to the bosom of the Republic of Indonesia, Saturday, December 21, 2024. The activity was held at the Convention Hall of the Tirtonadi Terminal, Solo, Central Java. The declaration was also attended online by 6,800 other former JI members via the Zoom platform.
The Chief of the Indonesian Police (Kapolri), General Listyo Sigit Prabowo attended the declaration in person. Also present were the Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Commissioner General Eddy Hartono, the Head of the Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-terror Police Inspector General Sentot Prasetyo, Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf, and a number of other officials. The declaration was also attended by figures and emirs of former JI including Alfian, Hammad (Ma'had Aly), Qosdi (Darusy Syahadah), Tengku Azhar, and others.
The Chief of Police said that his party welcomed the former JI who returned to the Republic of Indonesia. "We, on behalf of all colleagues in the Police and of course the country, express our gratitude and give the highest appreciation to the hard work together from our friends at BNPT and Densus 88 for their collaboration," said Sigit after the declaration, Saturday, December 21, 2024.
According to him, this collaboration is extraordinary and did not just happen. He said that before this he had held 45 meetings with former JI. "Until the declaration in Solo," he said.
He said that in handling this, a persuasive approach had been taken. Not only that, in the process they reminded each other to strengthen the Republic of Indonesia. "Of course we already have a joint commitment to maintain, join and strengthen the Republic of Indonesia. In the process we will remind each other together and provide assistance to all stakeholders," he said.
Furthermore, the Chief of Police invited former JI to build the country to realize Indonesia Emas 2045. "For all former JI friends, it is clear that we need sincerity together. And the spirit to remind each other to build the nation to become a better country," he said.
In his welcoming speech, the Head of Densus 88 Anti-terror Polri Inspector General Sentot Prasetyo, said that the success of the disbandment was the result of a dialogical, persuasive, and educational approach. "It has been proven to be more effective in suppressing radical ideology than a repressive approach," said Sentot.
Sentot emphasized that the approach is a unique model that is only applied in Indonesia and is proof that violence cannot be fought with violence.
Eddy Hartono as the Head of BNPT, said that his party is committed to providing assistance and training to all former JI. This is in accordance with the mandate of the Law and the mandate of the President and Vice President. "We will provide assistance to see further their future in society. We provide entrepreneurship training," said Eddy.
He hopes that former JI can live in harmony in the midst of a diverse society. "In the future, we will be like how the Chief of Police conveyed towards a golden Indonesia that is a better Indonesia inviting former JI to build the nation," he said.
On that occasion, former JI members expressed their commitment to leaving behind their dark past. In addition to their pledge of loyalty to the Republic of Indonesia, they have also opened access to 92 Islamic boarding schools that were previously affiliated with JI to be evaluated by the Ministry of Religion.
They also handed over various tools and weapons, including firearms, tens of kilograms of explosives, and various other logistics. They committed to participating in economic empowerment programs, such as AC service training and the formation of farmer groups in Subang, West Java, in collaboration with various ministries and the private sector.
On that occasion, a book launch was held by Sentot Prasetyo and his team entitled "JI: The Untold Story-Perjalanan Kisah Jemaah Islamiyah."
